We tried a few sheep of other breeds, but Kelda and I love our registered Shetland Sheep the most. They are small, hardy sheep that generally need less care than other breeds. They lamb easily, usually in March or April, need little hoof trimming and no tail docking. They have wonderful soft, versatile wool that has a very nice handle (feel).

Shetlands come in many colors, sometimes even with a variety of markings. And with their bright eyes and lively temperaments, they are never boring!

We breed and keep only the best sheep. A couple years ago we had the opportunity to breed many of our ewes using via AI (artificial insemination) using British semen from top Shetland rams. We got some very nice lambs and have continued to breed with the offspring.

We joined the Voluntary Scrapie program prior to this, so all our sheep and goats got those fancy eartags. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it. All of our animals are Scrapie-free and very healthy.
